great article I would say one thing is missing from the benefit of the old against the new - not to say that this new social media cannot achieve this however. communities raised each other. built better infastructure and looked out for their neighbor. I know one example of this that took place on a digital scale http://darmano.typepad.com/logic_emotion/2009/01/pleas-help-us-help-daniellas-family.html , but have we lost the neighborhood protecting one another aspect that we used to have?

I feel that there are still walls that are up. and although twitter and other forms of social media have helped to virtually bring those walls down there is still more that could be done to better our lives our communities and those around us.

In short, I'm right there with you and let's keep pushing forward.

It's ironic that as we seek bigger houses farther away from the center of town we develop technologies that can bring us back together. It seems we like the space, but don't care for the distance...

Hi David,
I enjoyed our call earlier today and now I'm over here on Twitter poking around. Look what you've started!

Dave,

Love the article. I think you're probably right. And, you do have a really nice front porch...

Thank you so much Sandra! It's something I have been mulling over for a while and I'm convinced it is a driving motivator in the spread of social media.

This is a great analogy, love it. I too was raised with grandparents that had front porches. The community gathering places. Neighborhoods were a tight knit family, watching out for one another. It seems you just barely know people 2 houses away any more. Thanks for taking me back to a simplier time, and yes social networking is that sentence or two you share like walking by a house with a front porch.
